Students create an imaginative, colorful fantastic city out of cardboard, paint, and collage papers that reflected their personality, energy, and spirit. Students used the artwork "Cartonlandia" by Ana Serrano as a visual guide and model for their own project and discussed the concept of community as a whole. What character, setting and storyline could be generated from their work of art? As an introductory activity, students completed a personality "colors" lesson where they got together in groups based on their personality attributes and presented to the class their strengths based on their "color."
I created a PowerPoint presentation on arts integration using the resources provided by the PST: LA/LA teacher PD session. In August 2018, teachers attended a one-hour professional development in which I presented ways that teachers could integrate the arts into various subject areas with a focus on the elements and principles of design. I also made an argument as to why integrating the arts helps engage students more in their classes, using the teaching and learning framework for reference.
