This year we took a field trip to the Autry museum to view the exhibit, La Raza. Students were very inspired and engaged in the documentary-style exhibition. Upon returning to the art room, we created our own assemblage mural that recreated a peaceful demonstration in one of our cases that focused on issues of relevance and importance to our students.
Using the Visual Thinking Strategies website, the New York Times series, "What's Going On in This Picture?", and various book covers, a fellow art teacher and I conducted a professional development session with English teachers at John Adams Middle School. We facilitated a deep examination of these images and demonstrated how this can be lead into expository writing among many other activities in the English classroom.
