Students from 4th and 5th Grade classes went to the Autry Museum. In the La Raza show, they wrote observations of the imagery on 3x5 cards that were later edited into poetry and used as inspiration for diary entries. They tried to answer the question, "Whose Story Matters?" and will continue to work with text and image to create an online classroom journal.
Teachers were invited to a holiday "pARTy," at which they were given a kit of various art supplies and blank sketchbooks. The educational materials I provided sparked conversation and inspiration about different ways that teachers can use "mediative drawing," art journaling, and recording thoughts and feelings as not only "self-care" but a safe space to get ideas out.
Thank you so much for this opportunity, and for the support of teachers! Above is an image taken by one of the teachers of the materials bundle that I purchased for each teacher with the PST: LA/LA grant, as well as the art journaling packet I created. They LOVED it, and guess what!? The principal found some extra funding that will allow me to teach drawing and painting to each child at the school for another six weeks. Your grant was so helpful in motivating the school to provide more arts experiences for students. -Meriel Stern
